We’ve all been there. You head to the station, wait in line for 30 minutes, and then find out the seats you wanted are already sold out. Not exactly fun.

The good news is you do not have to do that anymore. Booking a Pakistan Railway ticket online is actually pretty easy these days. You can check seats, pick your class, pay from your phone and get your confirmation without going anywhere. This guide covers everything you need. How to book, which class to choose, what happens if plans change and the railway helpline numbers that actually get answered.

How to Book Online

Two ways to do it.

The first option is the official website pakrail.gov.pk. Make an account using your mobile number and CNIC. Then just search for your train, choose your date, pick your class and pay. The whole thing takes about 5 to 10 minutes and you get confirmation on your phone right away. No printing needed at all.

The second option is the RABTA app. It is Pakistan Railways' own official app where you can book tickets, cancel them, pay and check your bookings from anywhere you like. Available on Android and iPhone. A few people have complained about it being slow or glitchy sometimes but mostly it works. If it is difficult just use the website instead.

One thing worth knowing before you pay. JazzCash and Easypaisa refunds come back faster than bank transfers if you ever need to cancel. Good to keep that in mind.

Rather Go to the Counter? Totally Fine

Some people just prefer going in person and there is nothing wrong with that. Walk into any reservation office at a major station, tell them where you are going and when, pay cash and you are sorted. You can book up to 30 days ahead so no need to rush.

Honestly if you are booking for a big family with lots of different CNICs and names sometimes the counter is just easier than typing everything into an app. Been there.

Which Class Should You Pick

Here is the simple breakdown without any confusion.

Economy is the cheapest ticket. No fixed seat on most trains. You get on and find yourself a spot. Fine for shorter trips. Gets pretty packed on long journeys though.

Economy Reserved means you have your own seat but no air conditioning. Decent enough when the weather is okay.

AC Standard is air conditioned with a proper reserved seat. Much more comfortable and worth it when it is hot.

AC Sleeper is what you want for overnight trips. You get an actual berth to sleep on. If you are traveling 10 or 12 hours trust me just book this. Sitting upright all night is not worth saving a few hundred rupees.

AC Business is the top class on certain trains. More space and better facilities overall.

Children between 5 and 11 years get half price tickets. Senior citizens aged 65 and above also travel at half fare on selected trains.

The Trains That Fill Up Quickly

Online train ticket booking works for all the big trains. Green Line Express, Tezgam, Karakoram Express, Shalimar Express, Khyber Mail. They are all there.

The Green Line between Karachi and Islamabad is the one that gets booked out the fastest. Same with the Karakoram Express on the Karachi to Lahore route. Book these a few days early and you will be fine. Leave it to the last day and you might end up with whatever is left.

Cancellations and Refunds

Plans change. Here is what you get back depending on when you cancel.

Cancel 48 hours or more before the train leaves and you get 90 percent of your money back. Between 24 and 48 hours before departure you get 80 percent. Within 24 hours you get 70 percent back. You might still get 50 percent back within a couple of hours of departure in some cases.

If the train gets cancelled completely or runs more than 6 hours late you are entitled to a full refund. But for this you need a written application with a signature from the station master confirming what happened.

For online bookings the money goes back through whatever you used to pay. JazzCash and Easypaisa refunds land faster than bank transfers. You cannot cancel once the train has already left so do not wait too long.

Counter tickets can only be refunded at a reservation office. Bring your original ticket and a CNIC photocopy when you go.

Also just so you know. You cannot change the date on a booking. If your plans change you have to cancel and book again which means you lose some money on the cancellation charge. A bit annoying but that is just how it works right now.

The Railway Helpline Number to Save

Pakistan Railways’ main helpline number is 117. It’s available 24/7 and works from any mobile or landline in Pakistan. You can call to ask about train schedules, ticket availability, fares, or to file a complaint.

Already booked and just want to double-check everything? Call 117 and share your PNR number. They can verify your reservation and confirm your seat details.

For Lahore Junction the direct number is 042-99203552 for general questions and 042-99201737 for reservations. If those are busy 117 is usually the quicker option anyway.

Want to file a complaint? You can call 117, use the complaint form on the official website, send an email to info@railways.gov.pk or just go to the nearest Station Master's office in person.

For anything security related at the station call 1316 which is the Railway Police helpline. Works across all provinces.

Things That Will Make Your Life Easier

Book early on the popular routes. Seats on the busy trains go fast and you do not want to be stuck with bad options.

Pay with a mobile wallet if you think there is any chance you might need to cancel. The refund comes back faster.

Save your PNR number after booking. You may need it if you call the railway helpline with a question about your ticket.

Check the train’s live status before you head to the station. If it’s running two hours late, you’ll be really glad you looked first.

If you know your plans have changed, decide to cancel before 24 hours. The difference between losing 20 percent and 30 percent depends on when you cancel. Do not wait.

Questions Worth Asking

Can I book without a CNIC?

No. You need a CNIC to register and book. The ticket belongs to that person and cannot be used by someone else.

I paid but got no confirmation. What should I do?

Check your booking history in the app first before trying to book again. If money was taken but no ticket shows up, wait a minute or two and refresh. Still nothing, then call 117 and have your transaction details ready.

Is 117 free to call?

Yes, completely free. Works from any network anytime day or night.
