Pakistan Railways Trains — FAQ
Answers to the questions people usually need before tracking a train, checking timing, or planning a trip.
- Pakistan Railways assigns direction labels to every scheduled service. UP trains generally run from south to north — Karachi towards Lahore, Rawalpindi, or Peshawar. DOWN trains run the opposite way. Both directions share a name but get separate train numbers: for example, Tezgam 7UP (Karachi → Rawalpindi) and Tezgam 8DN (Rawalpindi → Karachi).
- 'Live Now' appears when Pakistan Railways has confirmed that the locomotive has departed on that service today and its GPS unit is actively sending position updates. A card without this badge means the service is scheduled but not yet confirmed running — either it hasn't departed yet or the GPS is not reporting.
- Pakistan Railways' GPS tracking system covers both passenger and cargo locomotives because they share the same network and infrastructure. Cargo trains affect passenger scheduling — when a freight service is delayed at a crossing loop, passenger trains are held up too. Showing them gives a more complete picture of what is happening on the tracks.
- On a typical operating day, Pakistan Railways fields around 200+ scheduled passenger services plus a significant number of freight movements. The exact count changes based on maintenance cycles, seasonal demand, and operational requirements. PakTrainLive reflects whatever is actually confirmed running on the network each day.
- Each named train service runs in both directions, so it gets two train numbers — one for each direction. The UP number is typically odd and the DOWN number even. So if you see 'Shalimar Express 27' and 'Shalimar Express 28', they are the same named service running in opposite directions on the same route.
